When Should I See Someone About My Back Pain?

Our backs are involved in everything we do and are the foundation for every movement we make. We cannot sit, stand, walk, or reach without involving our back. And, since approximately 80% of us will experience back pain at some point in our lives, it is crucial that we understand our backs better.

So, how do you know when your back pain really needs professional attention or when it’s okay to just stick-it-out with an ice pack? Here are some guidelines that may help:

How much does it hurt?
If you are experiencing back pain for the first time, congratulations, you are old. Not really. It is common for 1st episodes of back pain to occur in the mid-twenties to early thirties. They often resolve quickly but may be associated with more trauma since most of us tend to be more active in that age range. If you have one or two occasions a year when your back hurts, don’t wait for the next one. This could mean that your spine has some significant mobility issues that need to be addressed. You don’t want to put off getting your back examined because those one or two episodes could turn into three or four occurrences or one big incidence of back pain that can really leave you immobilized.

Where is the pain located?
If your pain is localized to a small area of your low back it is likely that your injury is not as severe. If, on the other hand, your pain travels down into your buttocks and into the back of your thigh or leg, then you should consult a healthcare professional.

Is your back irritable?
You can often tell something about the severity of a back pain by how irritable it is. Is Corn Sugar Healthy?

How do you turn high fructose corn syrup into a healthy and fresh new harmless corn sugar? You rename it. The corn refiners recently launched a new campaign to rename the one single ‘food’ that Americans consume more than any other food calorie, high fructose corn syrup. With consumption of high fructose corn syrup at a twenty year low, the corn industry is looking for a hail Mary in an attempt to save its highly profitable ingredient (Archer Daniels Midland, one of the world’s top producers had 2009 revenues topping $69 billion).

Corn Sugar - doesn’t this sound harmless, unprocessed and natural? In fact the corn industry has already started marketing with this term by creating a new website and has commercials saying, “High fructose corn syrup HFCS -- corn sugar -- has been used in the food supply for more than forty years to make high fiber foods palatable, maintain freshness and enhance flavors in foods and beverages. Additionally, high fructose corn syrup keeps our foods affordable." Audrae Erickson, president of the Washington-based group, says that the new name would help people understand the sweetener. Really?

I am not sure how renaming this product will help people better understand it. Instead the industry should take the time to educate people on the difference between HFCS and sugar. Both compounds contain two simple sugars, fructose and glucose. The difference between these two compounds is that sucrose is 50% fructose and 50% glucose. HFCS is made up of 55% fructose, 42% glucose and the remaining 3% are higher saccharides, larger sugar molecules. The fructose in HFCS is more easily absorbed and utilized because it is free and unbound (in sucrose, every fructose is bound to a glucose molecule and must go through an extra metabolic step before it can be utilized in the body). When fructose is quickly absorbed and metabolized, it is done independent of insulin. Though this may sound like a good thing, it is not. If insulin is not signaled and released then leptin is not signaled and released (a key signaling hormone that regulates food intake and body weight). When this signaling system is bypassed, the body will continue to crave food. Studies have shown that beverages with added sweeteners may enhance caloric overconsumption, which makes weight loss harder to achieve.

The industry should offer statistics on the amount of HFCS people consume and its availability:

- On average, Americans consume 60 pounds of HFCS per person per year.
- HFCS accounts for 40% of caloric sweeteners in the United States.
- The consumption of HFCS increased more than 1000% between 1970 and 1990, far exceeding the changes in intake of any other food or food group.
- The increased use of HFCS in the United States mirrors the rapid increase in obesity.

Instead of starting a new site and using the name corn sugar (prior to approval by the FDA) they should start a site that talks about recent studies published on HFCS. Until now, the majority of studies have been short term studies and the results have been mixed. A new study from Princeton researchers published in February 2010 looked at both short term and long term affects of HFCS on body weight, body fat and triglycerides. The study showed that over the course of 6-7 months mice that had 24 access to an 8% HFCS “drink” and mice chow gained significantly more body weight (specifically adipose fat in the abdominal region) and had elevated triglyceride levels. Previous studies from Princeton has firmly established that if you give rats access to a 10% table sugar "drink" in addition to their normal feed (mice chow), they do not gain additional fat. In other words, their bodies are able to metabolize the extra calories without creating more weight.

The take home message? Sucrose is not ‘better’ than HFCS, other than it is natural and we can metabolize it. If weight loss is your goal, keep all natural sugar intake to a minimum and remove every bit of HFCS from their diet. Limit the intake of natural sweeteners like honey, agave nectar and real maple syrup.

Sugar is easy to spot on an ingredient label. Look for words ending in ‘ose’ (flucose, fructose, lactose), this indicates sugar. The following terms also indicate added sugar:

Ten Products To Avoid At All Times

A few months back I paraphrased James (Snakehead)
Carville, a Democratic consultant famous for getting ole Billy Jay
elected some years ago, when I said, "It's the sugar, stupid!"
(Although now is a good time to repeat Carville's words to all
Democrats within earshot, "It's the economy,stupid!")

I've watching the labeling on any number of food products lately,
while food manufacturers try and repackage many of their products as
new and improved, while they are still the same old junk.

Here are a number of things to stay far away from:

1. Powdered cane sugar
2. Sweet and Low
3. Pure Cane Light Brown Sugar
4. Pure Cane Dark Brown Sugar
5. Molasses
6. Agave Nectar
7. Busy Bee Honey
8. Equal
9. Pure Cane Granulated Sugar
10. Corn Syrup

Sugar is sugar is sugar. And these are all "sugar," as far as your
body is concerned. If you want to lose weight, you really should
avoid them all, as much as possible. Agave nectar is being promoted
heavily these days, especially by the vegetarian crowd, but the
reality is, it's just another sugar.

Just for an example, let's take cookies, which everybody likes. The
best commercial cookies could have as many as 4 of the ingredients
listed above, in addition to flour and chocolate. Actually, the
chocolate is the ingredient least likely to screw up your system,
but in all likelihood, there will be more of all the other
ingredients than chocolate in the recipe.

If you're looking for a sweetener, you could use Truvia, Stevia, or

can be found in most grocery stores. Truvia is being marketed much
the same as sugar packets, which from a marketing point of view
makes a lot of sense.

But what I would encourage more is to consume fruit in its natural
form. Eat an apple, a peach, some cherries, blueberries, watermelon
...there is an abundance of great fruit in the marketplace today and
you should take advantage of it. It is not only sound medical advice
to eat the rainbow of fruits and vegetables, but it's great for your
taste buds, which believe it or not, will not steer you wrong. When
you stop eating packaged products and start eating real foods, it
won't take long for your body to signal you that some of that crap
you've been eating doesn't pass the taste test, anymore.

Sugar contributes a great deal toward thickening the blood, which is
the start of heart disease, and it's something you don't want,
especially as Nobamacare rolls along. In the future, it isn't going
to be you and your doctor deciding what's best for you, it's going
to be some pointy headed government bureaucrat who's more interested
in statistics, than he is in you. You don't have to look any further
than England, where women with breast cancer have a 50% higher
motality rate than in the United States. Why? Rationing. That little
thing that Obama has been lying about, since he started this debate.

In rationing, there are only so many treatments available and when
the treatments are used up, the ones who didn't make the cut don't
get treated. That's why Obama had to sneak his rationing guy in the
back door, a couple of weeks ago. He knew that if the Senate had to
vote on this guy, they would never confirm him, because then, they
would be proving that they had lied all along. (Which they did.)

Yesterday, I went to a gym at the invitation of a friend. It's a
really swank place and 500 people could probably work out in there,
without a hitch. They have everything you need, including a massage
parlor. (And just my luck, I forgot my credit card.)

There was enough machinery in this place to build an iron sculpture
twelves stories tall and then some. There were enough weights in the
place to send the entire Gambino family to the bottom of Davy Jones'
locker and keep them there, 'til they turned to coral.

Once we checked in, after making a left turn toward the lockers, we
were greated by an 8 foot sign that advertised...potato chips. We
both stopped in our tracks. Could they be serious? Not only 8 feet
of sign, but on the sign it said, "A healthy choice...and available
in the "Healthy Cafe."

Wow! Gadzooks! WTF?

Potato chips are now a health food? And proudly sold by a fitness
company? I must have been asleep at the switch when this transition
took place. Since I was guest here, I didn't want to meddle. But my
friend, who has lost 50 some pounds by changing his lifestyle, got a
tad worked up in the locker. He thought the sign was disgraceful and
he wanted to complain.

Once he gets worked up, there isn't any changing his mind. We walked
to the front desk and he asked to see the general manager. (And as
luck would have it, she was in.) We were ushered up the stairs to
her office, which was pretty large. When I was running a large
surgical operation in New York, I never had an office quite this
big. ( But then again, I didn't have a snack food company pouring
millions into my operation.)

We were all intoduced and then my friend made his complaint about
the sign. He told the GM about his weight loss and that he
considered the sign to be offensive to people who were really trying
hard to lose weight. He told her, in no uncertain terms, that potato
chips are NOT health food and that the sign should be removed.

She was sympathetic, going so far as to imply that she agreed with
his point of view, and said that many GM's in the organization had
also voiced their concern. She also told us that the top dogs in the
organization did not agree and that, no matter what any of us
thought, the signs were staying.

The snack food company had paid out a lot of dough and nobody at the
top was giving it back. "They had a contract they had to honor."
Believe me, I thoroughly endorse honoring a contract. But I also
believe you don't enter into such hypocritical agreements. (Like the
American Diabetes Association getting one third of it's funding from
a soft drink company.)

It's a crazy world we live in, where well meaning folks team up with
sleazeballs, in order to "provide help."
